Mugger killed, 3 injured in mob beating

An alleged mugger was killed and three others were injured in a mob beating at Pancshar in Munshiganj Sadar upazila on Tuesday.

The dead was identified as Zakir Hossain, 34. The injured are Sabuj, 20, of Hatimara village under Sadar upazila, Al-Amin, 25, of Gopchar in Narayanganj and Ramzan of Madanganj in the same district.

Locals chased the muggers after they took away Tk 5.5 lakh from businessman Nasir at around 9.30pm and were fleeing by a CNG-run auto rickshaw. After about 1.5 kilometre chase the mob caught them and gave them a good beating.

Police rescued them in serious condition, arrested and later admitted them to Munshiganj General Hospital.

Zakir Hossain of Ballalbari in Sipahipara under Sadar upazila succumbed to his injuries yesterday morning.

Sadar police station OC Shahidul Islam said two other muggers however managed to flee with the mugged money.

Witnesses said businessman Nasir was going home by a motorbike from Nayagaon Habib Chairman Bari with Tk 5.52 lakh in a bag. The muggers swooped on him when he reached Pancshar crossing. Six of them wielding firearms waylaid Nasir, snatched the money and fled by a CNG autorickshaw.

Nasir and his companion Zahid chased the muggers. Locals came to their help and caught four of the gang near Ratanpur Ansar camp. Two other muggers fled with the looted money.

In another incident in Lalmonirhat, a gang took away about Tk 8 lakh from three traders and assaulted them at Durkuti Hat in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night.

A case was lodged accusing 11 with Lalmonirhat Sadar police yesterday.

The three traders are Abdul Matin, 40, Mukul Miah, 42, and Abdul Manan, 45, all from Saptibari village of Aditmari upazila, reports a correspondent.

Police said, the muggers attacked the three traders who came to Durakuti Hat for purchasing tobacco at around 8.30 pm on Tuesday. The gang assaulted them and took away the money. Locals rescued the traders and took them to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital.

The accused are Nuruzzaman,32, Sirajul Islam,28, Suruz Miah,25, Abdul Malek,30, Dazlu Miah,38, Shahabuddin,32, Ismail Hossain,29, Makbul Hossain,35, Mannan Miah,30 and Ratab Chandra,31, all hailing from Durakuti village of Lalmonirhat Sadar, police said.
