BNP calls strike in Munshiganj for today

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Munshiganj district unit has called a dawn-to-dusk general strike for today (Sunday) to protest the killing of local Juba Dal leader Akbar Hossain, allegedly by Awami Sramik League activists.

Meanwhile, Munshiganj police on Saturday arrested at least seven BNP activists who were reportedly drumming up support for the strike.

Munshiganj district BNP brought out a demonstration in support of the general strike at 5:30pm on Saturday in the town.

Police arrested the BNP activists from South Islampur, a BNP stronghold in the town, and created a panic situation to foil the demonstration programme.

Tension was prevailing in the town where a huge number of police were deployed to guard against any violence.

Earlier, secretary of the local government affairs of BNP central committee and district president Abdul Hai announced a 3-day programme at Murma of Mirkadim municipality under Munshiganj Upazila on Thursday while attending in the Namaz-e-Janaza of Akbar Hossain.

Akbar Hossain and some of his companions had come under attack at around 1pm at Sadarghat while they were on their way to attend the BNP grand rally at paltan maidan in the city on Wednesday.
