At least four people, including three children, were burnt alive when a gas cylinder of a CNG-run microbus exploded on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj on Saturday.
The victims were identified as Nahida, 8, Mehedi, 10, Jewel, 10, and Phool Miah, 55, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.
Gazaria police chief Arju Miah said the accident occurred around 1:30pm near Sher Ali Petrol Pump at Baluakandi of the upazila.
Additional Police Super of Munshiganj Saiful Islam said the cylinder of the microbus exploded with a big bang after hitting a road divider on the highway when it was taking a U-turn after refuelling gas from the pump.
The explosion ignited a fire in the microbus instantly. Four more people who were also on the microbus escaped the fire jumping out of it.
The victims were on their way to Shahjalal International Airport from Brahmanbaria to receive their relative.
4 die in CNG cylinder blast
At least four people have died in an explosion of a microbus gas cylinder in Munshiganj.
Police said that the explosion occurred just outside a CNG filling station ‘Sher Ali’ of Boluakandi under Gajaria Upazila adjacent to the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway.
The dead have been identified as ‘Nahid’, 8, Jewel, 10, Mehedi, 10 and Phul Mia, 55.
The additional police superintendent of Munshiganj, Saiful Islam, told reporters that the vehicle had hit a road divider as it was coming out of the filling station. “The gas cylinder exploded instantly and the whole car caught fire.”
Gajaria police station OC Arzu Mia said that the vehicle had eight passengers including the driver. “Although the others managed to jump out, four passengers could not. They were burnt alive.”
Police said that the microbus was heading towards Dhaka from Brammanbaria.
