Rail and water transport unhampered

The authorities have claimed that communications on the rail and water routes have not been hampered by the hartal. However, long route bus communication is at a standstill.

Railway director general Touhidul Anwar Chowdhury told bdnews24.com on Tuesday: “Trains are operating as scheduled. There have been no disruptions.”

However the crowd in Kamlapur Railway Station was thin.

Officials at the station said three trains had left for Chittagong, one for Noakhali, one for Dinajpur, one for Jamalpur and one for Brahmanbaria.

Moreover three trains, coming from Brahmanbaria, Jamalpur and Chittagong, arrived at Kamlapur at the scheduled time.

“Six launches have set off for their destinations from Sadarghat in the morning”, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) traffic inspector Syed Mahbubur Rahman Mahfuz told bdnews24.com, claiming that communications on water routes are normal.

Two of the launches headed off for Chandpur, two for Faridpur, one for Barisal and one for Munshiganj, he added.

However, Foyez Ahmed, a launch owner, told bdnews24.com that the launches had very little passengers. He added, “A launch named Shariah-1 did not set off for Bhairab due to the lack of passengers.”
