Politics of vengeance through bodily tortures

Maswood A. Khan
The present trend in Bangladesh of torturing suspects on remand in police custody to elicit confession under duress, many observers are afraid, may enter history as a black chapter of black law and may create the most tragic precedence for successive governments, if the incumbent party, for any reason, is rejected by people in the next general election. The successor government is likely to use the same or harsher torture tools against the members of the bygone government with more intensive cruelty.

The victims of the future torture paradoxically will not be those influential people in the power matrix, now or in the future, because they have means to buy air tickets to leave the country before any other party takes the rein of governance. Those helpless or innocent members of the political groups, who don’t have money or means to flee away from Bangladesh, will only suffer.
