Padma devours 300 meters of land on riverbank in 3 hrs in Munshiganj

Padma River in a sudden erosion devoured 300 meters of land in just 3 hours at Baro Naopara near Ghore Dour bazar in Louhajang upazila on Saturday night.

Witnesses said that mighty Padma started devouring land near the government quarter area without having any surge and current at around 10pm. Being informed by the fishermen, hundreds of anxious people gathered on the river bank.

Being panicked, the residents at the government quarter shifted their belongings to a safer place. Some 300 meters of land were devoured by the river by midnight while hundreds of families passed sleepless night beside the river bank.

On information, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zahedur Rahman visited the spot at 1:30pm while Whip-cum local MP Sagufta Yasmin Emily enquired the situation over telephone.

The river still kept eroding although the intensity came down in the early hours of Sunday.

Meanwhile, the local land office, sub-registrar office, thana bhaban, police quarter, government residence, government primary school and Dhaka-Moawa-Louhajang road are also at danger.
