Fog disrupts ferry services across the Padma

Dense fog kept ferry services halted for about 12 hours on Paturia-Daulatdia and Mawa-Kewrakandi routes across the river Padma until Saturday morning.

Manager of Aricha office of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) Bidyut Kumar Shaha told bdnews24.com the ferries were suspended around 10:30pm on Friday, but resumed at 10:30am on Saturday when the fog cleared.

Several hundred vehicles were left stranded on both sides of the river causing a huge traffic gridlock which was gradually easing after the ferries resumed plying.

Assistant manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Mawa, Chandra Shekhar Roy, said that ferry services on Mawa-Kewrakandi route had been suspended at 10:45pm on Friday and were yet to resume until 10am on Saturday.

Five ferries laden with about 800 passengers were left stranded, causing a severe traffic gridlock on both sides of the river.

Dense fog kept on disrupting ferry services on these two important river routes for last one week, affecting communication across the Padma.
