Efforts on to ease tension in Srinagar

Srinagar Upazila administration has organised a meeting with the locals in Munshiganj aimed at easing tension that still prevails following protests and clash over the controversial airport project.

The three-hour-long discussion began around 11am on Saturday with local MP Sukumar Ranjan Ghose, deputy commissioner and police superintendent from the administration.

Inhabitants of several villages around Arial Beel attended the discussion.

On Jan 31, daylong clashes at Srinagar between police and demonstrators protesting the construction of Bangabandhu International Airport left one policeman dead and at least 50 others, including four cops, injured.

Some 21,000 locals have been sued in four cases filed over the death and attack on policemen in two places.

Assuring the locals of ‘no harassment’, Ghose, a ruling party MP, said: “Please don’t pay heed to rumours and contact me, or the DC, SP or anyone of the administration.”

DC Mohammad Azizul Alam said, “We’re with you.”

Police super Mohammad Shafiqul Islam urged locals to help police identify the main culprits.

Locals at the meeting claimed that they were in fear of being detained or beaten up by police. One of them said such announcements came even from the local mosques.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday declared that the proposed airport would be built on the ‘other bank of Padma bridge’ and not in Munshiganj.

Srinagar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Abdul Latif Mollah presided over the discussion, which was also attended by Upazila chairman Belayet Hossian Dhali and local school teachers among others.
