3 more temple thieves held

Three more suspects have been arrested in connection with the theft at Dhakeshwari temple.

Police said they arrested Garibullah alias Aslam, 24; Mohammad Monir, 24; and his brother-in-law, Monir, 27, from Munshiganj, Narayanganj and Lakkhipur.

The three were said to be the masterminds of the theft.

Another man, Mohammad Selim, 35, was arrested on charges of stealing from Sutrapur Kali Mandir (temple).

The four were presented at a press conference in the city on Friday.

Deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan detective police Mohammad Monirul Islam told reporters that the four men were involved in the theft of Dhakeshwari temple on Jan 8.

He said they used a rickshaw to shift the stolen items to Karwan Bazar at night and concealed the items under piles of vegetables.

Gold and silver ornaments, and Tk 450,000 were stolen from the temple.

The theft at Sutrapur Kali Mandir took place on Feb 2.

During their drives, police have recovered 19 gold ornaments.

DC Monirul Islam said the arrested suspects were professional thieves.

Aslam confessed that he along with the two Monirs, and a Shah Alam had been involved in the theft on Jan 8.

He claimed that Monir was keeping watch outside while the other three entered the temple, one by one, by breaking open the locks.

Aslam also said they had long been involved in such stealing.

Shah Alam is still on the run.
