22 injured as AL factions clash in Munshiganj

At least 22 people were injured in Awami League (AL) factional clash over the selection of chairman candidate for the upcoming union parishad election at Hossaindi in Gazaria upazila Friday afternoon.

Police said there was a long-standing conflict between Gazaria upazila Chhatra League general secretary Monirul Haque alias Mithu, one faction of Awami League (AL) and local AL leader Arif Hossain over establishing supremacy in the area.

Officer-in-charge of Gazaria PS Arju Mia said at around 3:00 pm, AL acting upazila unit president Kamrul Hasan Chowdhury sat with the other local leaders and upazila chairman Refaetullah Khan alias Tota at local UP office to select a chairman candidate.

In the meantime, outside the UP office, supporters of Mithu and Arif equipped with sticks and lethal weapons were waiting to hear the decision of the meeting and at one stage they locked into a fierce clash, leaving 22 people injured from both sides.

The injured were admitted to different hospitals and clinics. Police, on information, rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control.

In Barguna, a mobile court yesterday handed six months imprisonment to an agent of union parishad chairman candidate for violating poll code during March 29-April 3 polls in Patharghata UP.

The convict was identified as Kamal Gazi, agent of chairman candidate Alamgir Hossain.

Coast guards arrested him at Gaharpur Government Primary School for violating election rules yesterday.

After examining record and witnesses, Patharghata upazila judicial magistrate Amit Kumar instantly tried him and handed down the punishment.
