LAUNCH CAPSIZE
Three more bodies, including two of children, have been recovered from the Shitalakhya river, where a launch capsized on Wednesday evening, pushing the death toll to 12.
The bodies recovered were that of ‘Rahim,’ 1, Ratan Chandra Ghosh, 55, and an unidentified child, aged around 8.
The bodies were recovered around Friday noon, Narayanganj Bandar Police Station officer in-charge Saiful Islam told bdnews24.com.
On Thursday, a body was recovered from the water, while eight others were recovered from inside the launch, MV Medinar Alo, which capsized around 7pm on Wednesday and was salvaged seven hours later.
The launch capsized with around 200 passengers on board when an oil-tanker hit it near Char Muktarpur. The launch was on its way to Narayanganj, from Matlab in Chandpur.
The ‘serang’ and the quartermaster of the tanker were arrested on Thursday, hours after a case was filed with the Bandar police.
Two committees were formed on Thursday to investigate the accident.
Mercantile Marine Department engineer Shafiqul Islam was named the head of a three-member committee to probe into the accident, while Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority director Shafiqul Huq was made the head of another three-member panel for the purpose.
