Blockade for power creates acute traffic jam

Locals blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Gozaria upazila of Munshiganj for two and a half hours Tuesday morning demanding uninterrupted power supply, creating acute traffic jam on the highway.

Arzu Miah, officer-in-charge of Gozaria Police Station, said hundreds of villagers blocked the highway at Baluakandi bus stand area around about 8:00am.

The angry locals set fire to tyres on the highway and chanted slogans protesting loadshedding.

As the law enforcers attempted to drive them away to clear the highway for traffic, chase and counter chase took place between the demonstrators and law enforcers.

Hundreds of vehicles, mostly passenger buses, lined up on both sides of the highway this time.

The agitated locals withdrew their blockade at about 10:00am after officials of the local administration assured them of addressing the problem.

Later, the protesters put barricades at Bhaterchar, Anarpara and Bhitikanti points on the highway but withdrew those at about 10:30am, said Asaduzzaman, upazila nirbahi officer of Gozaria.
