12 hurt as sand lifters clash with villagers

At least 12 people were injured, including four by bullets, in a clash between local people and sand extractors in Gozaria upazila of Munshiganj Tuesday morning.

Arzu Mia, officer-in-charge Gozaria Police Station, said, the clash ensued when the villagers of Baushia resisted the sand lifters from extracting sand from the river Meghna.

Transport movement on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway remained suspended for an hour since 11:45am as the villagers put a barricade near the Meghna-Gomati Bridge protesting the incident, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control around 12:45pm.

The injured were admitted to different local hospitals.

AL supporters-villagers clash in Munshiganj: 15 injured, 3 by bullet

At least 15 people were wounded, three by bullet, in a clash between ruling Awami League supporters and villagers at Charchashi village in Gazaria upazila on Tuesday morning over sand lifting from the Meghna River.

After the fierce clash, agitated villagers put barricades on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway, disrupting vehicular movement on the route for four hours.

Gazaria thana OC Md. Arzu Mia told banglanews, “The clash ensued at about 8:30am as hundreds of villagers attacked the dredger operators while collecting sand from the Meghna, leaving 15 people injured.”

Three people received bullet wounds during the clash. But it is not clear which group fired gunshots.

Bullet-hit Suruj Mia, 27, Rabin, 20, and Saiful, 18, of Bausia Barakandi village were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The rest were admitted to Bhaberchar health complex and other clinics.

The OC said six villages, including Charchashi, in the upazila came under erosion threat because of sand lifting by the Awami League supporters.

Additional police were deployed on the highway and on the riverbank at Charchashi after the rioting.
