40 hurt in Munshiganj clash

At least 40 people were injured including 15 by bullets in a gunfight between two groups of people in Tongibari upazila of Munshiganj Wednesday morning.

The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Munshiganj General Hospital, reports our Munshiganj correspondent.

The clash ensued around 9:00am between supporters of Noor Mohammad, chairman of Kathadia-Shimulia Union Parisad (UP), and Shamsuddin Miah, a member of Ward No-6 of the union, over sharing the money collected from the local cattle markets, said Kazi Daud Hossain, officer-in-charge of Tongibari Police Station.

A large number of police personnel were deployed in the area to stave off further trouble.

In another incident, two local Awami League (AL) leaders were injured in a factional clash at Rasulpur Bazar in Gazaria upazila on Tuesday.

Injured Saral Khan, 52, president of ward No-4 of Imampur Union Parisad unit of the party, and Nasir Uddin Miaji, 60, vice-president of Gazaria upazila unit of AL, were admitted to the DMCH.

Witnesses said the brawl took place between the supporters of Saral and Nasia around 7:00pm.

Later, both groups equipped with firearms and sticks attacked each other, leaving Saral with a bullet-injury in his leg.

Arju Miah, officer-in-charge of Gazaria Police Station, confirmed the incident saying Mujibur Rahman, a former chairman and Jubo Dal leader, led the attack.

No arrests were made in this connection.
