Kolkata victim Gauranga is from Munshiganj

Gauranga Mandal, a Bangladeshi killed in the massive fire at AMRI Hospital in Kolkata, is from Sirajdikhan upazila in Munshiganj.

The 70-year old was a farmer of Kanainagar village of Chitrakoat union. Gauranga’s home on Friday afternoon was cast in a pall of gloom with family members bewailing his death.

The multi-storeyed private hospital in Dhakuria, Kolkata turned into a towering inferno early Friday morning. Among the 89 dead, there are 70 patients and three staff.

Gauranga’s son and his nephew Rakkhit Roy accompanied him to Kolkata and admitted him to AMRI Hospital last week. He had been treated for excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain for about a month in Dhaka, relatives said.

Rakkhit conveyed the message to Gauranga’s family around noon, said the deceased’s nephew Jyotish Mandal.

Jyotish told bdnews24.com: “His family members became worried after getting the news of fire on Friday morning. After a few hours Rakkhit called to say that Gauranga was no more.”

The process to bring back the body of Gauranga through the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata is underway, the South Asia Department director general Mashfi Binte Shams had earlier told bdnews24.com

Family members had identified the body, Shams said.

Many Bangladeshis go to India for better treatment.

Gauranga is survived by three sons and a daughter. Two of the sons live in Kuwait and the other in Singapore.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee told reporters on the spot the licence of the hospital had been cancelled.

Hospital authorities have declared to give Rs 500,000 to each of the deceased people’s family.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has condoled the loss of lives in the tragedy.
