Fresh chargesheet in Humayun Azad case soon

Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will soon submit a supplementary charge sheet in a case on attempt to kill late Professor Humayun Azad on February 27, 2002, reports BSS.

At least four more people including Jamaat-e- Islami Naybe Ameer Mawlana Delwar Hossain Saydee, three JMB leaders Salahuddin, M Rafiq Hasan Rasel alias Hafiz Mahmud and Golam Mostofa alias Mostofa are likely to be indicted in the fresh charge sheet, CID officials said.

“We have already completed reinvestigation into the case and we are now waiting for postmortem report of Dr Humayun Azad, a professor of Bangla Department of Dhaka University,” Special Superintendent of CID and supervising officer of the case Abdul Kahar Akand told BSS at his office on Sunday.

“We sent a letter to the government of Germany through foreign ministry seeking the postmortem report over a month before and we are yet to get their response,” he said adding that they need the report to confirm the reason of Dr Azad’s death.

After more than four years and nine months of the attempt on Dr Azad’s life, CID on November 11, 2007 submitted the first charge sheet accusing five operatives of the banned Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

The first chargesheeted accused are JMB chief Mawlana Shaikh Abdur Rahman, his brother Ataur Rahman Sunny, his second-in- command Siddiqur Rahman alias Bangla Bhai, Nur Mohammad Shibu alias Shamim alias Mizanur Rahman and Anwarul Alam alias Bhagne Shaheed.Of them, Shaikh Abdur Rahman, Bangla Bhai and Sunny were executed in a two judges’ killing case in Jhalokathi.

On August 11, 2004, Professor Azad was found dead in his apartment in Munich, Germany. Officials of the German Embassy in Dhaka informed his family of the matter the next day.

He was staying alone in the apartment on the Munich University campus since his arrival on August 8 on an invitation from the writers’ forum PEN International to do research on German writer Heinrich Heine.
