Canal grabbing: 6 alleged encroachers summoned

The High Court on Thursday summoned six persons of Munshiganj to explain why legal actions should not be taken against them for constructing structures grabbing a canal, Nayaner Khal.

The alleged land grabbers – Jasim Uddin, Abdul Salam, Monir Hossain, Kamal Uddin Ahmed, Shahid and Amanullah – have been summoned to appear before the court on January 26.

The court issued the directive acting on a report of Bangla daily Prothom Alo published Thursday.

According to the report, the alleged land grabbers encroached a portion of the canal and constructed structures there.

The bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim directed the officers-in-charge of Louhajang and Mirkadim police stations of the district to produce the six before the court on January 26.

The HC also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why it should not be directed to protect and preserve the canal and to take action against the land grabbers.

Deputy Attorney General ABM Altaf Hossain placed the newspaper report to draw the attention of the judges.
