Padma bridge deal by Oct: Muhith

The finance minister on Wednesday said though it was unclear with whose money the Padma bridge will be built, the government was moving to sign agreements by next October.

“The agreement initiatives are being taken as part of a plan to start the bridge construction in November,” Abul Maal Abdul Muhith said at a media briefing after a meeting with Chinese ambassador Li Jun at the finance ministry.

When asked whether China was interested in the much coveted project, Muhith said the government thought of alternative ways to finance the project.

“But China only suggested quick resolution to issues with the World Bank, nothing else,” he said and added that both Bangladesh and China had good relationship with the global lending agency.

The World Bank was supposed to lend $ 1.2 billion of the $ 2.9 billion in constructing the Padma bridge but suspended its funding bringing allegations of corruption.
