WB urges govt to pursue probe

Padma Bridge graft issue
The World Bank has strongly urged the government to pursue “its own investigation” into the corruption-related issues concerning the Padma Bridge Project.

In a statement released on Tuesday to the media, World Bank Country Director Ellen Goldstein said the bank “began sharing findings of serious corruption with the Bangladeshi government related to the Padma Bridge Project in September 2011.”

She reaffirmed that the World Bank “stands by its investigations.”

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), on its part, earlier completed an investigation into alleged graft in the bidding process of the Padma Bridge Project and found no irregularities.

The WB suspended disbursement of its committed fund for the Bridge, alleging graft in the bidding process.

The government has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Malaysia on the construction of the 6.15 kilometre Bridge.
