The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on Sunday night announced the old ferry Terminal No. 3 at Mawa abandoned as it developed some cracks.
BIWTA Deputy Director Abdus Salam told bdnews24.com no ferry operations were taking place from the terminal since Monday morning.
The pontoon being used at the terminal will be relocated to the new terminal in operation beside the launch terminal there. This will be Mawa’s main ferry terminal for now.
Salam said it would take several hours to finish the pontoon’s relocation work.
Louhajang Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Saiful Islam said the river Padma was eroding land between terminal Nos 2 and 3 at Mawa and the people living in the areas had been shifted to safety.
Two old ferry terminals at Mawa were lost to erosion on Oct 9 and 14, forcing the authorities to run ferries using the Terminal No. 3 for a week.
It caused commuters immense sufferings ahead of the Durga Puja and Eid-ul-Azha festivals.
Two new terminals have been constructed at Mawa intersection and Rishibarhi following orders from Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, and work of another at Kandiparha will begin soon.
