three people were killed and at least 40 others injured when a BTRC bus rammed a three-wheeler passenger carrier, locally known as ‘tomtom’, in the Sirajdikhan Upazila in the evening.
The identities of the deceased were not immediately known.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Zakir Hossain Majumder told bdnews24.com that both the bus and passenger carrier fell into water-filled roadside ditch near Chaltipara around 6:30 pm because of the impact, leaving three men dead on the spot.
At least 40 people were rescued from the submerged bus and admitted to the Sirajdikhan Upazila Health Complex.
The police fear more bodies might be lying trapped inside the two submerged vehicles.
Local MP Shagufta Yasmin Emily, also a whip in Parliament, visited the spot, making inquiries about the rescue and treatment arrangements.
The district’s Deputy Commissioner Saiful Hasan said that the vehicular movement on the highway was normal and that steps were being taken to retrieve the two vehicles.
