Srinagar OC summoned for not recording rape case

hcThe High Court has asked the officer-in-charge (OC) of Srinagar Police Station in Munshiganj to appear before it on April 2 for allegedly not recording a rape case.

Yeasmin, the first-year college student, was raped by one Sheikh Aslam at Baroikhali village in the upazila on February 12, and two days later she committed suicide. But, Srinagar police reportedly refused to record any case in connection with the incident.

In response to a writ petition, the HC today ordered OC Mahbubur Rahman to lodge a case against the rapist and his associates in 48 hours and submit a report before it after complying with the order in 10 days.

It also asked the home secretary to form a probe committee in seven days to investigate the allegation of negligence of police to record the case and to submit a report before it in 30 days.

The court issued a rule upon the government to explain in four weeks why the inaction of police to record the case should not be declared illegal.

The HC bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Habibul Gani came up with the order and rule after hearing the writ petition by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh on Sunday seeking necessary orders against the offenders and the police.

At today’s hearing, the petitioner’s counsel Manzill Murshid told the court that the negligence of police in taking action against the offender has compelled the victim to commit suicide.
