ASI suspended for assaulting polls official

upzilalogoAn assistant sub-inspector of Gazaria Police Station in Munshiganj was suspended last night for assaulting an assistant returning officer of the upazila polls.

Witnesses said ATM Mahbub-ul-Karim, assistant returning officer and also the upazila nirbahi officer of Gazaria, was distributing electoral materials among the presiding officers at his office premises in the evening ahead of today’s upazila election.

He asked his office staff to paste serial numbers on the packets of electoral materials. All of a sudden, ASI Emdadul Haque started tearing off some serial numbers.

When Mahbub enquired why he was doing that, the ASI flew into a rage and assaulted him.

Talking to The Daily Star, the election official confirmed the incident.
The ASI, however, denied assaulting Mahbub physically. “The UNO hurled abuse at me. I returned some,” he claimed.

The UNO later informed the district returning officer Sarwar Murshed, also the additional deputy commissioner of Munshiganj, about the incident.

Probing the incident instantly, a probe body led by the additional district magistrate found the allegation against the cop to be true.
The probe report will be sent to the Election Commission to make any further decision on the incident, if required, Sarwar told this correspondent.

Habibur Rahman, district superintendent of police, said the ASI has been suspended and punitive action will be taken against him.
