At least 20 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of two chairman contestants in upcoming upazila elections in Gajaria on Friday during campaign for their candidates.
Upazila Awami League office was also vandalized during the hour long clash, said local sources.
Witnesses said supporters of incumbent upazila chairman and AL candidate Amirul Islam and AL rebel candidate Refayet Ullah Khan Tota had an altercation near the party office in Sonali Market area at about 11am.
At one stage of the altercation, both the groups chased each other and locked into clash, leaving 20 supporters from both sides injured.
The injured were admitted to local health complex and hospitals in Dhaka.
The feuding groups, however, left the scene as army, RAB, BGB and police personnel deployed in the area.
Meanwhile, both chairman candidates blamed each other for ensuing of the clash.
