The government was considering the allocation of around Tk8,000 crore for the Padma Bridge project in the next budget, Communication Minister Obaidul Quader has said.

However, the amount that has already been allocated for the project will not be withdrawn, the minister assured.

He made the disclosure while visiting the construction site of the Padma Bridge and river control in Louhaganj in Munshiganj district on Saturday afternoon.

Mentioning that the main construction work would begin in June, he said: “As the main construction work is yet to begin, we have returned Tk5,000 crore to the government fund. But, this amount will be added with the total fund that will be allocated for the Padma Bridge project in the next budget.”

He said the work order for the river control would be given next august, adding that three firms have been ordered to submit the financial proposal.

He further said the Mawa ferry terminal would be temporarily shifted to Shimulia, and later permanently to Kandipara.

“The terminal transfer work will begin within three to four days. Army will oversee the work. It will take some seven to eight months to set up a permanent terminal in Kandipara,” said the minister.
