Man rescued month after abduction

shobujDetectives rescued the accounts officer of film production house Jaaz Multimedia from Munshiganj early yesterday, a month after his disappearance from the capital.

Abu Bakar Sabuj was abducted by one of his friends, Rafiqul Islam Nayan, and his four associates from near his residence at Mirpur-10 on April 26. The criminals demanded Tk 1.1 crore from his family as ransom.

The victim’s father, Abdur Rahim, filed a case with Mirpur Police Station on May 1, which was later handed over to the Detectives Branch (DB) of police.

Earlier, police arrested Jaaz’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Shish Manwar and Production Manager Uzzal on suspicion, detectives said.
Detectives arrested Rafiqul, 29, Mainul Hossain Babu, 30, Arif Hossain Milon, 44, in Mirpur area late Tuesday, said DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam, addressing the press at the Media Centre of Dhaka Metropolitan Police yesterday.

Based on their information, the detectives raided Dakkhin Paikpara in Tongibari thana of Munshiganj and rescued Sabuj from a house. They arrested another alleged kidnapper, Quamrul Hasan Nayan, 27, there.

The DB official said Jaaz CEO Shish had recently sacked Rafiqul and put Sabuj in his place. Angered by this, Rafiqul might have kidnapped Sabuj, he added.

Describing the day of the abduction, Sabuj said he was waiting for a bus at Mirpur-10 to go to his workplace at Moghbazar. “Rafiqul came there in a car and offered me a lift to Karwanbazar. Four others were also in the car. I got in and after a while I fell unconscious as I drank cold drink offered by Rafiqul,” he said.

Quoting the arrestees, Monirul said the gang confined him for 25 days to a congested room at Fatullah in Narayanganj and then shifted him to Munshiganj.

The victim said, “The criminals told me that I was kidnapped to be murdered at the direction of the CEO [Shish]. If I paid the money, they would release me.” Sabuj, however, did not believe that Shish did this to him.

Shish’s wife Rasheda Sultana Riva claimed that her husband was innocent, and said Rafiqul blamed him to take revenge and tarnish the image of the institution.

In preliminary interrogation, detectives did not find involvement of Shish and Uzzal, said the DB official.
