As per the contract, the mobilisation advance was paid last month. The government has paid a mobilisation advance to China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd for the construction of Padma Bridge.

“We have paid 15% of the total contract value to China Major Bridge Engineering Company Ltd as a mobilisation advance,” Project Director Shafiqul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.

The mobilisation payments will be adjusted later, he said, adding that as per the contract, the mobilisation advance was paid last month.

Sources said a cheque for Tk1,800 crore was handed over to the Chinese company, which gave a guarantee of the money from United Commercial Bank.

On June 17, 2013, the government signed a contract with China Major Bridge Company to build the Padma Bridge at a cost of Tk12,133.39 crore. The mega project has to be completed within 48 months since the date of the signing of the contract.

Bridge Division Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam said after signing the contract, the construction of the bridge had started. The mobilisation advance is usually paid as per a standard contract for bringing equipment to the bridge site, he added.

Sources said China Major Bridge Company requested the bridge authority to pay the mobilisation advance to purchase construction materials and bring those to the construction site.

The project director said the Chinese company had also started conducting a survey. It had already built houses for the accommodation of engineers. Once the 6.15km bridge is built, it will connect 21 southern districts with Dhaka.
