The High Court yesterday ordered the government to stop constructing structures in a river in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj in a week and to submit a compliance report before it in two weeks.

In response to a writ petition, the court directed the government to take legal action against the people responsible for constructing illegal establishments in the river.

It also issued a rule upon the authorities concerned of the government to explain in four weeks as to why the construction of structures in the river should not be declared illegal and why a direction should not be given to remove them from the river.

An HC bench came up with the order and rule after hearing the writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.

Citing from the petition, HRPB’s lawyer Asaduzzaman Siddique told The Daily Star that some local influential people including Zabbar Madbor and Jalil have reportedly been constructing structures for a market and a house in the tributary of the Ichhamoti and Dhaleshwari rivers after encroaching its land at Matborerhat in Sirajdikhan.
