Rapist, abettor placed on remand

Police yesterday arrested the “so-called” boyfriend of a 17-year-old-college girl from Munshiganj whom he reportedly raped during her visit to Dhaka on Friday.

“We have arrested Ratan Lal alias Sumon, 40, from the staff quarters of Ramna Park area by using our technical support and investigation leads,” Sher-e-Banglanagar police station Sub-Inspector Jahirul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune.

Quoting his confessions, he said Sumon, who was once a cleaner at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. had sexually harassed the girl followed by a seven-day affair after meeting her at a bus stand in Munshiganj.

Sub-Inspector Jahir said they also arrested a 40-year-old woman called Nazma Begum, who had abetted him in the rape, after extracting information from her during his primary interrogation.

He said Nazma had abetted Sumon by providing the latter space to have sex with the girl at a flat on Green Road in the capital. She had been renting space to local boys who wanted to spend their intimate time with girls or their girl friends.

The woman used to take Tk 500 to 100 from a boy for renting her flat space or depending on her relations with them, he added, quoting alleged rapist Sumon.

Also the case investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Jahir told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have turned the general diary filed with New Market police station into a rape case.

Both Sumon and Nazma were yesterday placed before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, seeking a seven-day remand for them in the case.

Magistrate Mollah Saiful Islam allowed only one day for placing them on remand.

The rape victim from a village in Munshiganj’s Sadar upazila came to the capital on the invitation of her “friend” Sumon on Friday.

Later, Sumon took the girl to the flat of Nazma where he raped her.

The next day, she was admitted by her family members at One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The medical report conducted on girl health condition found evidence of rape.
