Padma Bridge claimants demand fair compensation

Hundreds of people whose land have been acquired for the construction of Padma bridge staged demonstration in Madaripur yesterday demanding fair compensation.

The people mostly from low income group formed a human chain at Kawrakndi ferry ghat in the morning.

Speakers at the rally said before acquiring the land, the government had pledged that it would provide monetary compensation to the affected people according to size of each land, but about 1,000 familes who lived at Charjanajat and Bakharer Kandi villages were yet get any compensation.

Harun Bayati said thousands of poor families had given up their land for the sake of a bridge over the Padma River with a hope that their lives would change forever.

The speakers also threatened that they would put up barricade on road at Kawrakandi ghat on January 21 in order to sever road communication between the capital and southern part of the country, if they were not provided with compensation.

According to the Bridge division sources, Padma Bridge project, including approach roads, rehabilitation and development of the project area, has been completed and now the main construction work of the bridge will begin soon.
