Dhaka-Munshiganj road blockaded protesting extortion

Transport workers in Munshiganj have blocked the Dhaka-Munshiganj road in protest of the alleged extortion and abduction of a driver.

Dhaka-Munshiganj Sarak Bus Malik Samiti Secretary Sanaullah Bepari confirmed the news on Monday.

The workers also suspended bus services on the route, he said.

He alleged some extortionists led by Delowar Hossain of Narayanganj claimed Tk5,000 per bus.

On being refused, they vandalised seven buses, kidnapped bus driver Sohel Mia, and took away his bus around 11am on Monday, he added.

He said police rescued bus driver Sohel Mia and his bus (Dhaka Metro-Ja-14-0450) from Koilaghat of Narayanganj around 1pm.

To protest these incidents, transport workers have let their buses stand across the road in Mukterpur, and bus services on the Dhaka-Munshiganj route have been suspended, the transport leader said.

With assurance of arresting the criminals from traffic police Sergeant Kamrul Hasan, the transport workers withdrew the barricade but bus services on the route are still suspended, Sanaullah said.
