HC grants bail to Pinak-6 owner

The High Court on Monday granted interim bail to the Pinak-6 vessel owner arrested on charge of his negligence that caused the death of 200 passengers of the ferry that sank in the Padma river in Munshiganj.

The bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddiqui and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore also asked the government to explain why the ferry owner, Abu Bakar Siddique, should not be granted regular bail.

The court passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Abu Bakar seeking bail in the case the Bangladesh Inland Water transport Authority filed with the Lauhajang police station against him and five others after the Pinak-6 ferry sank on August 4, 2014.

ML Pinak-6, a double-decker ferry with a capacity of 80 people, sank in the Padma near Lauhajang in Munshiganj with about 250 passengers on board. Most of them were returning to their workplaces after Eid vacation.

Abu Bakar was arrested in Chittagong on August 14, 2014, ten days after the incident.
