The Bridges Division is set to appoint a new NGO to rehabilitate families who have lost their lands to land acquisition for the Padma Bridge project.
The move comes after the contract with Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB) – the NGO that initiated the rehabilitation work in November 2009 – expired on January 31.
“We want to complete the rehabilitation programme of Padma Bridge by appointing another NGO as extra land acquisition is needed,” said Md Makbul Hossain, supervising engineer of the bridge project.
He said the CCDB had been able to finish 90% of the rehabilitation before its contract expired.
A proposal for selecting a new NGO has already been sent to the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase, and it is expected to be placed before the committee on March 18, Makbul told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday.
According to the proposal, signed by Bridge Division Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam, the Eco Social Development Organisation has been selected by the project evaluation committee for running the rehabilitation programme.
