A court in Munshiganj on Thursday convicted two people and sentenced them to life term imprisonment for killing a man on June 7, 2004. The court also fined the lifers–-Babul and Shahadat–Tk 50, 000 each, in default to be suffer one year more RI. Among them, Shahadat was tried in absentia.
According to the prosecution, a group of miscreants attacked Abdullah Al Mamun and his brother Masum at Kamargarh in Sreenagar Upazila in Munshiganj when they came out of their house to join a procession brought out by the Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh’s leaders and activists.
They stabbed the two brothers, leaving Masum dead on the spot and Abdullah injured. Abdullah filed a case against some people with Sreenagar Police Station. On August 10, 2004, police submitted chargesheet against 11 people. Later, the case was shifted to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal from the district court. After examining the records and 23 witnesses, Judge of Speedy Trial Tribunal Shahed Nuruddin handed down the verdict acquitting nine other accused, according to a news agency.
