At least six workers died in a fire that broke out at a textile mills in Sadar upazila of the district on Wednesday.
The fire originated when flickers from welding machine came in touch with chemicals on the first floor of Ideal Textile Mills at Charmuktarpur around 10:00am and soon engulfed the factory building, said Joynal Abedin, In-charge of Muktarpur police outpost.
The dead were identified as Israfil, 26, Nazmul,20, Babu,22, Anwara alias Hasina Begum, 60, Sajib,30, and Ratan,32.
Police recovered the bodies and sent them to Munshiganj General Hospital for autopsy.
On information, four fighting units from Munshiganj and Narayanganj rushed to the spot and doused the flames around 12:30pm.
Joynal feared that the death toll likely to increase as some workers remained missing.
The police officer described that the samples of a product were being made using chemicals on the floor while welding was also being done beside.
At one stage, flickers from the welding machine came in contact with chemicals and caused the fire, which quickly engulfed the factory.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shaila Farzana visited the spot. As per directive of the DC, police detained three officials, including general manager, of the mills, for interrogation.
The district administration gave Tk 25,000 to each family of the dead victims for their burial.
