Bridge knocked down by sand-laden vessel

A 200-foot-long concrete bridge was destroyed after being hit by a sand-laden vessel, known as a bulkhead, in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj.

Movement of people on both sides of the bridge is being severely hampered due to the collapse that occurred on Thursday afternoon.

The incident took place when the bulkhead, named Bahadur Kadir Khan 1, hit one of the pillars of the bridge. The master of the vessel managed to flee immediately after the incident, but the bulkhead was trapped in the river.

Some of the pedestrians who were crossing over the bridge during the collapse were injured in the incident and taken to local hospitals.

Acting officer-in-charge of Sirajdikhan police station Abul Kalam Azad told the Dhaka Tribune that a case was in the process of being filed regarding the collapse.
