Archaeological work opens in Tongibari

Archaeological work was inaugurated at Nateswar under Tongibari Upazila here on Friday afternoon. Chairman of Dhaka Commerce College governing body and Professor of Commerce Department at Dhaka University Dr Shafiq Ahmed Siddiqui inaugurated the work as chief guest.

Later, a discussion meeting was held beside the archaeological site. President of Agrasar Bikrampur Foundation Dr Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin presided over the meeting.

Among others, Zila Parishad Chairman Mohiuddin Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Dr Farzana Islam, Director General of Archeology Department under Ministry of Cultural Affairs Altaf Hossen, Cultural Councillor of China Embassy Sun Yan, Additional Deputy Commissioner Harun-or-Rashid, and Tongibari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Hasina Akhter were present at the meeting as special guests.

It may be mentioned that with the initiative of Nuh-ul-Alam Lenin and with the funding of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, the formal archaeological digging was started in February 2010.

During the archaeological digging in the last seven years, a one-thousand-year old Buddhist Vihar at Roghunathpur of Rampal and another 10-acre Buddhist temple at Nateswar of Tongibari were discovered.
