At least 10-12 thousands of day-labourers have come to the district from North Bengal for potato cultivation. The labourers came to six upazilas of the district to work on contract basis. They will return to their homes after sowing the seeds and will come again during harvesting season.
The family members of the local farmers are engaged in differnts business or staying abroad that’s why the district experiences manpower shortage every year. So the potato farmers have to cultivate potato taking labourers from other districts.
Potato is the main cash crop of the district. Hundreds of labourers from Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Netrakona and Mymensingh come to Munshigang to sow the seeds of potato every year.
The labourers take the contract to sow the potato seeds at Tk 18-25 thousand in 140 disimals of land. They take advance money from the farmers before coming to Munshiganj. They will return home after sowing seeds and will come again with female members of their families during harvesting.
They work on contract basis. After finishing contract with a party, they go to another party. So they have their food in the field.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extention (DAE) Mohammad Humayun Kabir said at least 20,000 labourers come from North Bengal to Munshiganj every year.
The DAE said the target of potato cultivation was set at 39,300 hecters in the district.
