‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ in Munshiganj

A person was killed and three police officers were injured in an alleged gunfight between some law enforcers and a gang of robbers in Munshiganj yesterday.

According to police, the deceased, Rinku Dewan, 24, was an accused in 21 cases. He was from Dewankandi village of the district.

Officer-in-Charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station Alamgir Hossain said acting on a tip-off, police went to Charbeherpara area to arrest Rinku around 12:00noon. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, Rinku opened fire at them. Sub-inspector Sanjay Sanjay was shot in the leg.

Police opened fire in retaliation and at one stage, Rinku was shot and killed, the OC said. Police recovered his body and a firearm from the spot.

Superintendent of Police Mohammad Jayedul Alam claimed that Rinku was a “notorious criminal” and involved in various offences. There were at least 21 cases involving robbery, extortion and drug peddling against him, he added.

Sub-inspector Bacchu Mia, in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost, said SI Sanjay was hit by a bullet and given treatment at the hospital.
