AL activists beat journalist in Munshiganj

A correspondent of Bangla daily Kaler Kantho was allegedly beaten up by followers of a local Awami League leader at Lauhajang in Munshiganj on Wednesday.

The daily’s Munshiganj district correspondent Masud Khan was beaten by the followers of Lauhajang upazila AL joint general secretary BM Shoyeb at Bikrampur Press Club in the area, according to eyewitnesses.

The victim was admitted to Lauhajang Upazila Health Complex and was later discharged after primary treatment.
Perpetrators also snatched about Tk 50,000 and valuables from his possession after beating him up following a news story on an iftar party which had Shoyeb’s name missing, said Masud.

Lauhajang police officer-in-charge (investigation) Rajib Khan said that they arrested three people — Ashik, 20, Mohammed Selim, 26, and Delwar, 55, of Uttar Haldia village under the same upazila.

The victim filed a case with the police station. ‘We are also looking for other accused’, Rajib said.
