Publisher shot dead in Munshiganj

Free-thinker writer and publisher Shahzahan Bachchu, also a left politician, was shot to death near his village home at village Kakaldi under Sirajdikhan in Munshiganj Monday evening.

The deceased Shahazahan was a free-thinking writer, owner of publication house Bishaka Prakashani in Dhaka and a former general secretary of Munshiganj district unit of Communist Party of Bangladesh, police, locals and CPB leaders said.

A villager, Kamal Krishna Paul, told New Age that miscreants by motorcycles rushed in the tea stall at village Kakaldi where Shahzahan was sitting around 6:30pm, opened fire on him and fled away by the same motorcycles.

Munshiganj additional superintendent of police Asaduzzaman, quoting the locals, told New Age that four assailants by two motorcycles opened fire on Shahajahan Bachchu.

‘He died on the spot,’ he said, adding that they recovered the body from the spot and sent it to Munshiganj General Hospital for post mortem examination.

‘We came to know that he was an online activist and had a publishing house and free thinking writer.

‘We are yet to ascertain whether it was an extremist attack. But we have been investigating keeping all aspects in mind,’ said Munshiganj superintendent of police.
