NSU STUDENT’S DEATH: Rights group demands exemplary punishment
North South University student Saidur Rahman Payel was killed by staffers of the Hanif Paribahan bus he was travelling by, said Munshiganj superintendent of police Jayedul Alam in a press briefing at his office on Thursday.

Referring to the confessional statement of a staffer, the SP said that Payel, 20, had got off the Dhaka-bound bus from Chittagong to respond to call of nature at Gazaria in Munshiganj when the bus got stuck in traffic jam on July 21.

‘When the bus began to move fast, Payel tried to get on the bus hurriedly and dashed against door of the bus. He fell onto the ground, with nose and mouth bleeding. The bus staffers threw his body from the bridge thinking that he was dead and left for Dhaka,’ the SP said.

His body was found under the bridge on July 23.

Police on Wednesday arrested bus driver Jalal, supervisor Foysal and assistant supervisor Jony of Hanif Paribahan, the SP said and, of them, Foysal made confessional statement.

Meanwhile, Passengers’ rights organisation Jatri Adhika Forum in a statement on Thursday demanded exemplary punishment for the killers.

The statement by the organisation’s convener Kefayet Shakil and joint-convener Antu Mujahid said that the act of the Hanif Paribahan staffers was a murder and they should be brought to justice and punished exemplarily.
