a drug peddler was killed in a “gunfight” with law enforcers at Srinagar upazila of the district, police said today.
The deceased Md Shohrab Hossain, a resident of the upazila, was accused in 13 cases including killing, abduction, confirmed ASP Mohitul Islam, the camp commander of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab)-11, of Vaggokul camp.
On information, a team of Rab-11 took position in Srinagar’s Chhatrovog area early today after learning that drug peddlers would meet at the area to sell drugs, said Hossain, also assistant superintendent of police (ASP).
Sensing law enforcers’ presence, the criminals opened fire at them forcing them to retaliate. At one stage, the top listed criminal was caught in the line of fire, the ASP said.
After the “gunfight”, Shorab was found with bullet injuries and his group members fled the scene.
The gunfight also left Rezaul Islam, assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and Sipahi Kamruzzaman injured.
One foreign pistol, bullets, cash and 600 pieces of yaba tablets were recovered from the spot, the ASP said.
