The first death anniversary of progressive writer and publisher Shahjahan Bacchu was observed on Tuesday.

Lutfa Akhter, wife of Shahjahan Bachchu presided over the program at East Kakaldi in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj, where relatives, well-wishers, and associates were present.

Speakers at the program said: “Bachchu was a poet of free thought. He was killed by fanatic fundamentalists but his thoughts will not die.”

On June 11, 2018, the freethinking writer was shot to death on the streets of Munshiganj by Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) militants. Bachchu was a former general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Munshiganj unit, and the owner of Bishakha Publication.

Three of the four accused in Bachchu’s murder, were killed in a gunfight with the police in September last year. According to police, the three were JMB members.

CPB Munshiganj unit President SM Kamal said: “We are still awaiting the trial of Shahjahan Bachchu’s murder.”

Sirajdikhan police station OC Farid Uddin said: “Three of the four accused in the murder case were killed in crossfire. The other accused is yet to be identified.

“Two months ago the final murder case report was submitted to court.”
