At least ten workers of Padma Bridge Rail Link Project were injured when the private security guards of the project opened fire on workers in the project area at Sitarampur of Lauhajang in Munshiganj Wednesday evening.

Of the ten, at least three of the workers were bullet shot and all the injured workers were rushed to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, confirmed UNO Md Kabirul Islam Khan.

The incident took place at about 7:15pm on Wednesday when over 150 workers locked in an altercation with the contractors regarding mismanagement over their daily pay. The event took turn when the security personnel opened fire against them injuring the workers, sources say.

Dr Shah Alom, in charge of the emergency unit of the hospital, said: “We treated ten people, among which eight were workers and two were guards. None of them was in critical condition and left the hospital after receiving the necessary treatment besides the guards.”

The security guards were rented from a private organisation named, Prevent Security Company and work for the Chinese Railway Engineering Company, which is in charge of the Padma Railway Link Project, says a press note, published on Facebook by the Munshiganj Police’s Sreenagar Circle.

“The whole incident spurred from confusion, and we took the situation under control,” said ASP Md Asadujjaman.

“Filing of a case is underway and no one has been arrested yet,” added the ASP.
