11 more spans remained to be installed
The 30th span of the Padma Bridge was successfully installed at Shariatpur’s Zajira side on Friday, achieving the target of installing four spans this month despite the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
The Span 5-B (30th span) was installed on pillars 26-27 while 11 more spans remained to be installed, said Engineer Dewan Md Abdul Kader, project manager (main bridge).
He said that with the installation of this span, 4.5 kilometres of the bridge is now visible. “Of the 2917 Roadway slabs 594 have been successfully installed and 1105 Railway slabs have been installed among 2951 of such.”
Until Friday, the main bridge and river training works reached completion respectively at 87% and 71%, taking the overall development to 79%, said Engineer Dewan.
“The complete project is isolated [from people not engaged in construction work]. So there is no problem here working while maintaining safe distancing. All health directives for the coronavirus are being followed inside,” Dewan further said.
Once in operation, the Padma Bridge will connect 21 southern districts with the capital and boost the country’s GDP by 1.2 percent, according to experts.
The 6.15km long two story bridge is being constructed of steel and concrete. The main bridge is being built by the China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Company Limited.
