A total of 192 railway girders and 125 roadway deck slabs of Padma Multipurpose Bridge project were washed away in the erosion by the river Padma at Munshiganj point on July 31.
Following the incident occurred between 2:00pm and 8:00pm, the cabinet division secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam, bridges division secretary Mohammed Belayet Hossain and project officials visited the area.
The project executive engineer Dewan Abdul Quader told New Age on Tuesday that during erosion 800 tonnes of iron scrubs were also devoured by the river.
He said that the railway girders have to be collected from aboard which would take time, while the roadway slabs would be constructed locally.
He also said that works of the bridge was going and added that the exact extent of the damages to the project was yet to be assessed immediately.
Under the project, 31 spans, out of 41, have already been installed over the river till now.
The 32nd span was scheduled to be installed at the end of June, but the strong current in the river stalled the work.
The overall progress of the project is around 81 per cent till now, officials added.
