13 injured in an explosion at residence of Mirkadim municipality mayor

At least 13 people, including four councillors, were burnt after an explosion took place at the residence of Mayor Abdus Salam of Mirkadim municipality in Munshiganj this evening.

Nine were taken to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for better treatment, reports our local correspondent quoting Shaibal Boshak, on-duty doctor of Munshiganj General Hospital.

For all latest news, follow The Daily Star’s Google News channel. Of the injured, mayor’s wife Kanon Begum was shifted to the intensive care unit of the institute with 60 percent burns on her body, he said.

The others injured are: councillors — Md Sohel, 52, Awlad, 47, Deen Islam, 40, Rahim Badsha, 55 — and Md Tajul, 20, Md Mosarraf, 50, Md Monir Hossain, 50, Shaymal Das, 45, Panna, 55, Kalu, 45, Idris Ali, 50, and Mohiudddin, 52.

Injured Panna Hawlader, a staffer at the municipality’s engineering section who had gone to the mayor’s house on an official visit, said some councillors and municipality staffers were present at the time.

The explosion took place on the third-floor of the four-storey building at 8:00pm, causing a fire, he said, adding most of them were left with burns.

Abu Yusuf, station officer of Munshiganj Fire Service and Civil Defence, said they were yet to know the details of the incident.

A bomb disposal unit was heading to the spot as of filing this report.
