Drowning in Padma river: 4 bodies recovered

Four bodies have been recovered after two separate incidents of drowning in Munshiganj district’s Lohajang upazila.

Bodies of Mahim Bepari (18) and Shimanto (17) were recovered yesterday afternoon from Dakkhin Moshdogau area adjacent to Padma River. Shebun Bepari’s son Mahim, and Tipu Khandaker’s son Shimanto, were both from Moshdogau area.

After another drowning incident yesterday evening, Abdul Kader’s (25) body was recovered from the Kolma area. Kader — son of Abdul Goffur — was a resident of Narayanganj district’s Shiddhirganj area. The floating body of a child, Maryam (7), was also recovered this morning. She was the daughter of Minar Hossain from Lohajang upazila’s West Noapara village.

The Station officer of Sreenagar Fire Service Abul Kalam Azad confirmed these incidents and said three friends Ekanto, Mahim, and Shimanto from Dakkhin Moshdogau were bathing in Padma river when strong waves swept them away. Local fishermen were only able to rescue Ekanto.

Later, the locals conducted a search and recovered bodies of Mahim and Shimanto from Mridha Bari area of ​​Bejgaon in the upazila at around 1pm, he added.

Many tourists were seen bathing in the Kolma area where Maryam drowned. Abdul Kader tried to save her, but he also drowned, he said.

Later, both the bodies were recovered, Azad said.
