Chinese worker goes missing in Padma

Rescue operation underway
A 38-year-old Chinese man working as a foreman in the Padma Bridge Project has gone missing after reportedly falling in the river near Shimulia ferry terminal in Louhajang upazila of Munshiganj.

Humayun Kabir, a deputy assistant engineer at the project, told Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday that Zhao Jiang Ping was tasked with the job of installing a power tower (number 13) of the National Grid as part of the project.

Along with Zhao, a number of workers stay at a makeshift camp near the ferry terminal and they use boats to go to the tower point in the river daily.

Authorities concerned said Zhao had gone to the tower point for work and went missing around 8pm on Tuesday. His colleagues alerted police after failing to locate him.

On information, coastguard divers conducted a search operation in the river at night, but did not find him.

Mawa river police OC Sirajul Kabir said the rescue operation was still ongoing as they were yet to find the Chinese national.

However, Dewan Azad, station officer at Srinagar Fire Service and Civil Defense station in Munshiganj, said: “We are not sure if the missing person even fell into the river at all since no one can confirm that.”

“However, six divers have been conducting search operations in the river since 5:30am Wednesday. But he has not been found yet. It is taking a long time because of the rising water level in the river,” he added.
